The prizewinning Brazilian photographer Eustáquio Neves, 58, is an exponent of expanded or experimental photography (where the emphasis is on the procedures used by the photographer to create the photo). He is one of those great black artists situated below the Equator, whose work all African American citizens should know.

One reasons, among others, is his brilliant techniques as shown in the handling of the prints and negatives. Also by the politicized aesthetics of the images full of references to his African ancestry and that subliminally encourage reflection about the Blacks and their socio-cultural conditions within the modern society.

The book Black art in Brazil: expressions of identity (2013), still without an official launch date is now available for purchase through the website www.upf.com, this can be a great opportunity for the American public to better know the artist's work.

Written by Kimberly L. Cleveland, Assistant Professor of African and African-American Art History, at Georgia State University, the book examines the work of Eustaquio Neves. His work addresses the secular traditions related to race and social that promote contemporary aesthetic language and speech.

“In the first place I am an artist, and by chance I am Black. The dimensions that my work will reach must be independent of the color of my skin, but I speak from inside my culture. When the Black people see my work they end up understanding themselves better. My images encourage whites to reflect on the trajectory of Black Brazilians as being not very different from that of Blacks around the world”, says the artist.

In the United States the work of Eustáquio can be seen in The World Bank Collection (Washington, D.C) and in the Museum of Fine Art (Houston, Texas).
